We’re going to give this a try as another regular spot on the blog. I will take your questions and answer them from my perspective as an interior designer. First question is “how can you make a small bathroom look and feel larger.” This applies if your bathroom is narrow, or just small.

Ok, so how can you make a small bathroom look and feel larger than it is?

Well, when the size of the bathroom has to remain the same, embrace its size and make it cute and cozy. Even though a small area can be challenging, I find that it can be a lot of fun to work in a small area.

Color is critical to feel like the space is welcoming.

Choose a color scheme to start with for the walls that will make existing fixtures, like the bathtub, sink, and toilet look good. Let’s presume they are white and the floor is light-colored. Light-colored themes are best for small bathrooms. Let’s paint or paper (remember, wallpaper is in again ) the walls in a color that you love, but one that may not be a great color for a much bigger room. Bring the color onto white towels and any other linens you have.

Large floor mats can make the space feel bigger.

On bathroom mats, my approach is NEVER to use small floor mats, especially in a small bathroom. For this essential item, go big. If your bathroom is rectangular put a runner in there, as long as your bathroom can handle. If the bathroom is square, see if you can find a round floor mat to add a little bit of visual appeal. You do not have to place the mats by the sink or by the toilet (ugh, just don’t).

Also if you’re wondering where you’ll find big formats for your bathroom, here’s a hot tip: They do not have to be bathroom mats specifically, get creative.

The right shape and size mirror will help make the space feel more spacious and practical.

Now the walls, let’s use as much of the wall space to get the “cute and cozy “ feel we are looking for. Round mirrors are very in right now, if you have one sink. If you have dual sinks, then find a framed rectangular mirror of a size that spans across both sinks. A large framed mirror like this will make things look a little bigger.

Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.

The last thing you want to do for your small bathroom is find interesting shelving units to hang on the wall. Use the shelves for accessories. Add a series of themed framed pictures to one of the walls (most likely opposite of the mirror). On top of the toilet tank, you could add a plan, artificial is fine if you aren’t much of a green thumb, but a real plant really helps button up the space; even just one succulent, an orchid, a begonia, or even a snake plant on a corner. Here’s a good list of some good houseplants for your bathroom.

Stay clutter free!

Keep your bathroom clutter free! Don’t leave stuff on the countertop near the sink or sinks. Use your shelving and storage to keep things tidy and you will see your space appear larger this way. Clutter always makes spaces feel crammed.

Good luck, happy rennovating!
