As I re-ignite my blog, I thought about writing some articles to guide you through the process of moving, relocating, or just redesigning your living space. I love helping you design your home to be just perfect.
Here are some things to consider when relocating. Whether you’re moving far away out of state or relocating within the same city, I hope this little bit of unsolicited advice will be helpful to you.
Tip #1 Get Rid of Things You Don’t Love
My best advice is to try and get rid of things you don’t love. Especially items that are dated, in any disrepair, or are huge.
If you don’t love it or if it doesn’t inspire you, then get rid of it. The big pieces will cost you a lot of money to transport. And if you don’t love it, why bother with it!?
Hot tip – Prevent headaches and heartaches! An interior designer can help with the relocation process! Get in touch with us early to discuss your upcoming move or relocation. Even a free consultation may change the outcome of your move.
There are a few reasons for getting rid of your old furniture. For example, the furniture will not look as good in your new residence, and it may not fit correctly the way you expect it.
Your new rooms will be a different size; the ceilings might be taller or shorter and this will change the angles and perspectives you’re used to.
Oh and please, IKEA furniture is not worth moving out of state. Trust me, purge that right away.
Tip #2 Update Your Color Scheme to Match Your New Surroundings
If you’re moving to a different climate, you may want to update your color scheme. Maybe the new location calls to warm up the rooms or cool them down with the right colors to match the unique elements of the new environment. You can use a color palette designer tool, or draw inspiration from online sources to help you come up with a new color scheme.
For example, if you want a beach or ocean-inspired color palette, you can look on this website for ideas, or use the search there to find something else like a desert or even a location, like Arizona, etc.
Adobe also has a tool where you can upload your own picture and it will create a color scheme based on that picture. You can use that tool for free here.
I found a video to help you create your own palette if you want, the person in the video is explaining this process to use in something else, but the end result is the same, follow her tutorial and you’ll be able to create your own color scheme in a few clicks. Here’s the video.

Use this color palette to plan your paint, furnishings, wallpaper, and decorations to be used in your new place.
Tip #3 – Have fun! Change Things up A Bit!
Once you’ve moved and are trying to place your existing pieces into your new home, feel free to change things up a bit. Try using some of your pieces in different rooms than you are accustomed to.
It can be fun, exciting, and inspiring! Give it a try!
Remember and acknowledge that moving and relocating is a stressful endeavor. A lot of decisions need to be made, don’t stress about it and this leads me to the last bit of advice I want to share with you.
Bonus Tip #4 – Get Help
The last tip of advice is to get help. You don’t have to do this alone, and often times just a little bit of advice, or direction may be all you need. Of course, I want you to hire me and I want to be your interior designer, but even if we don’t end up working together, you owe it to yourself to get some help, professional expertise is better of course, but help is essential!
Call on an interior designer when you start planning your move; believe it or not, we can be instrumental in making your relocation go smoothly and give you blissful results. We will keep you on track; get your new home updated and looking peaceful, and yes we will save you money, well I can’t speak for every other interior designer in my area or yours for that matter.
This is a time when you can make costly mistakes from being overwhelmed. Emotions are running high, and the pressure from vendors and movers doesn’t help; you have to deal with utility companies, escrow, titles, and rentals and on top of that, you have to keep your busy schedule. With everything that goes on during a relocation, it’s easy to compromise on quality or style, and you could regret it later on.
Don’t call in a designer to fix things. Instead, call them in to help to make your moving experience smooth and exciting from the beginning. After all, this is your next chapter; it should be fun and memorable in a good way.
